The Story:
After living full-time in Beaufort NC for 25 years, I have fallen in love with our town, its barrier islands, wild horses, the endless variety of boats which pass through our waterways, our local shrimp boats, our sea life, our bird life and Cape Lookout National Seashore. All of my paintings reflect my love for these special and unique local treasures.

This painting was inspired by my love for Beaufort, the by-gone days, and its fisheries. In 1934, one of Beaufort’s menhaden fish processing plants was acquired from the Mace family and became Beaufort Fisheries, Inc. This plant operated for the next 75 years. According to Jule Wheatly, the founder’s grandson, the company only had to close once in its history, but it managed to survive. Now it is the site of the Beaufort Hotel...

Back in the day when the menahden were being processed, Beaufort was layered in a heavy fog like odor...it was referred to " As the smell of money. "
